Collins refers to a recent Van- couver Sun column I wrote about racism, but dodges the points [| made. I was not, as he suggests, writing about immigration but about the language of hate. Collins understands that concept well, so I am surprised he didn’t address it. Columnists are granted a con- siderable privilege not available to feporters: our views may well in- fluence public opinion. But it is a privilege that should be yoked by fairness and accuracy. By presenting shaded truths that have the potential to incite hatred and mistrust of minorities, Doug Collins abuses his position. People of color such as Committee for Racial Justice president Aziz Khaki become ‘‘tlie East Indian from Uganda, Tanzania, or some place like that,’ while CRJ is a ‘miserable little mob.’ Multiculturalism becomes ‘‘the multicult menace.’"* Women are ‘weeping fems,'’ homosexuals are “‘queers,’’ ‘‘pansies,’’ ‘‘limp- wristed"’ and “‘fairies ... sniffing at Police should enforce local firework bylaws Dear Editor: We live in an area quite close to Blueridge School and, over the past few years, we have noticed a significant deterioration in the peace and quiet of our neighborhood, mainly due to a constantly growing barrage of firecrackers and associated noise makers, which nobody scems abic or interested to do anything about. This insanity starts in earnest about July ! and increases to a veritable crescendo during the month of Gctober, leading up to Halloween. We have had to accept this as a price to pay for living in a typical suburb; however, things took a- decided turn for the worse on New Year's Eve, when some jerk set off some ‘chinese candles,’’ one of which landed on the rubber lining of our new roof gutter, thereby starting a dandy fire. It was only thanks to my neighbors and my _ immediate response with garden hose etc. that this fire did not spread, thus con- ceivably burning down the house. Aside from the aggravation and even in spite of ample insurance coverage, this lawlessness will cost me a few nundred dollars and Jeads me to the conclusion that, since no authority cares to do anything about this growing pro- blem, in future we will have to take the law into our own hands, to forestall a repeat of such near- disaster. Why can’t or won't the RCMP or the District of North Vancouver enforce any bylaws anymore? Is it really up to individual citizens to enforce the law? Whenever we phone any authority, ail we ever get is a nonchalant run-around. Mr. aad Mrs. F. Tolerance, understanding, and a respect for others’ dignity do not figure in Collins’ distorted view of the world. Those who object to his hit-and-run attacks become targets of derision in his subsequent col- umns. Collins says he *‘lusts’’ to debate me. I don’t doubt it. He appears to have a pathetically compulsive need for attention. Were his ran- tings not so dangerous, they would be pitiable.
