OE RE-STYLED AND RE-ENGINEERED Toyota updates Cressida AN ALL-new Cressida, which combines the look of luxury with performance through advanced technology, makes its debut for 1989. “The re-engincered and re- designed Cressida faces a real challenge to fill the shoes of its predecessors,’’ says Hector Dupuis, senior vice-president of Toyota Canada Ine. For two years in a row, Cressida has been chosen the ‘most trouble-free car in America’ ac- cording to a survey conducted by the J.D. Power and Associates research firm in the United States. “Until now, I did not think anyone could improve on perfec- tion, but with the new 1989 Cressida, Toyota rewrites the standard in virtually every way,” continues Dupuis. A sleek new aerodynamic body shape combined with restyted inte- rior and all-new suspension system make the 1989 Cressida a hand- some replacement for its predecessors. The adoption of a new 3.0 litre, twin cam/24-valve 6-cylinder engine, derived from the Supra, increases horsepower in the ‘89 Cressida by 22 per cent to 190 at 5,600 rpm and torque is up 12 per cent to 185 Ib.ft. at 4,400 rpm, compared to previous models. From its low, wide, sloping front-end and fine, lattice-like radiator grille to its strong flowing fender line and taut-lined rounded body style, Cressida says aerodynamics. Compared to last year’s model, it is 45 mm_ longer and 20 mm _ wider. The Cressida has new aluminum wheels which tend a graceful sense of motion, even when the new car is stationary. Cressida’s smooth aerodynamic body shape and all-new chassis signal great strides forward in both design and construction. Improved structural rigidity combined with the use of noise damping and ab- sorbing materials produce a quieter and more comfortable passenger compartment. The interior features an in- tegrated design to create a spacious feeling with a look of sophistica- tion. A tuxurious fecling is enhanced by power windows and door locks as well as seven-way adjustable power driver's seat. In addition, clectronically-con- trolied, one-touch heating and air conditioning has smooth-operating continuous variable blower fan featuring improved output and reduced noise.
