Venice went on to become a world power, commanding a maritime em- pire that reached its zenith in the 15th century. When fortunes shifted, upstarts like Napoleon were able to strut in St. Mark’s Square, which he called the drawing room of Europe. ’ These days, in the summer at any rate, the tourists come by the legion.
