The small fortune is hidden in the form of a voucher somewhere on Vancouver Island; the clues to its location are in Vancouver Island, A Colour Portrait, a book produced by Tom and Sandra Sutherland. “‘We figured we would be sink- ing that much money into promo- tion of the book anyway,’’ Tom Sutherland said, ‘‘so we thought why not give it to some needy soul?’* Sutherland’s latest publishing venture is a 144-page, four-color coffee table-style book. that showcases the character of Van- couver islanders and the beauty of the island’s rugged natural en- vironment. The book was produced and fi- nanced by the Sutherlands with major corporate. sponsorship from B.C. Tel, the B.C. Ferries Corp., Coast Hotels and Woodward's. Basic production and printing ex- penses, Sutherland said, ran to over $100,000. All photographs in the book were taken by Tom while the text was written by Sandra. Vancouver Island, A Colour By TIMOTHY RENSKAW News Reporter Sutherland’s second book Portrait is major photographic publishing project. Sutherland, along with News photographer Cindy Bellamy, produced the 1986 opus Van- couver: A Year In Motion. Released in Vancouver's Expo year, the book captured the emerg- ing world-class character of Van- couver through the cameras of 50 of Vancouver’s best photographers in the year prior to Expo 86. The book was published by Collins Publishing Ltd. of Canada and was produced with the same quali- ty and eye to detail invested in that company’s extremely successful Day in the Life series of photography books. But Sutherland, who underwent a crash course in the complexities and politics of book publishing and production with Vancouver: A Year In: Motion, said he decided to self-publish his latest book, “because I wanted to keep control of the project from start to finish.”’ PUD 2 atae tiers Fo) ee GO aE OUR PORTRAIT ete eee 37 ~ Suridiaxy, Octdber 11; 1987 — North Shore*News. coffee tal Inspiration for Vancouver Island sprang from the Sutherlands’ fas- cination with the island’s vast beauty. “You don’t realize how big it is,"’ Sutherland said, ‘‘and you can’t really appreciate its beauty until you have travelled it from one end te the other.”” The Sutherlands spent nine months researching, touring and photographing the island and its people for the book. With an initial press run of ck up $7 10,000 copies, Vancouver Island, A Colour Portrait is currently in bookstores and communities the length and breadth of Vancouver {sland and is available locally for $39.95. Despite repeated coaxing, Sutherland refused to offer much information on how or where the eight clues in the book leading to the $12,500 could be found. He said the idea to run the con- test was initiated when work began on the book. “They (the clues) are nox in se- quential order,’’ Sutherland said. “*And the treasure is accessible by people of any age. You need both the photos and the text (to figure out where the treasure is).
