Classroom training takes place at the North Shore Training Cen- tre, the British Columbia Institute of Technology computer training facility at Lonsdale Quay. Local companies on the North Shore will also be participating in the program. Kitchen said that firms like the program as well. ‘‘It provides an opportunity for employers to see how a young person can develop into the job with the right kind of training. Other staff like the addi- tional help and in this tough mar- ket young people get training and experience so they can get that et’s face it. A lot of companies 4 4 job,” she said. With a training allowance from the federal government, students in the program are helped with the transition from school to work with on-the-job training. Shirley Patterson, Whistler In- ternational’s program coordinator, agrees that this type of program can help with the difficult school- to-work transition. “You learn how to learn and then you learn some hard skills such as computer and typing and then you spend some time with the company. When you return to the classroom you discuss the business things relevant to the job,’’ she said.
