Doug Collins @ get this straight @ THE LIBERALS of the Western world are having orgasms over Comrade Mikhail Gorbachev, who is seen as the kind of guy who would give his last pair of socks to the poor. And while they are making up to him, they continue to fight the Second World War ‘and fight ‘*fascism’’. In their view, communism is quite respectable. Which is odd, seeing that communists have wiped out and continue to wipe out more people than Hitler ever did, and that fascism is out of fashion. The slaughter goes on in Afghanistan, for instance, while Joe Clark bobs and bows to his Soviet counterpart. Even Mag- gie Thatcher has a few warm words for Mellow Mikhail. As for the media, they wax ecstatic. “The Gorbachev Revolu- tion,”’ state the headlines in the idiotic Globe & Mail. “‘Light Through The Prison Door,” etc., etc. All this has come about because Mellow Mikhail has engaged in some propaganda moves: he has let a few dissi- dents out of jail, may let a few thousand Jews emigrate to Israel, allows a bit of free enterprise at the garden-plot level, cranks up the ‘‘peace’”’ song, and talks about introduc- ing ‘‘democracy’’. By ‘‘democracy’’ he does not mean he’s going to let the kulaks set up shop again, or anyone to organize an opposi- tion party. For one thing, the kulaks are dead. For another, he could no more allow democracy in the U.S.S.R. than the government of Poland could allow Lech Walesa to run for office. We swallow Gorbachev's stuff whole even though we have seen it all before. In the 1920s, for example Lenin in- troduced his ‘‘New Economic Policy’’ in which private farm- ing was permitted. Not long after that, private farming was out and millions of kulaks starved or were murdered. Today, if only for practical reasons, murder on such a scale is not likely to be repeated. But the U.S.S.R. is still a vicious police state and must for ever remain one if the regime-is to survive, That’s why it’s against the Jaw for a Soviet citizen to allow a foreigner to spend a night in his apartment. For reasons of “state security’, too, ordinary people don’t even have phone books. As for ‘‘justice’’, anyone who has been charged with a crime is guilty before he enters the court room, the court’s main function being to decide the sentence. If the secret police take you away you won't get to talk to your lawyer in a hurry, either. Despite all these things and a million more, you would think that Mellow Mikhail would make a good candidate forthe U.S. Republican Party. But there’s nothing new about that, either. Stalin once got a good press as ‘Uncle Joe’’, even though he was the greatest murderer of all time. Mao Tse-tung was in Joe’s class, too, but that didn’t stop Pierre Trudeau admiring him. If there has ever been a pro- gram on the CBC that was crit- ical of the U.S.S.R. I must have been out of the country. What they’re concerned about, on alternating days, is Chile and South Africa. And that’s the pattern in the West generally. Let a few fools or eccentrics Tun around waving swastikas, though, and we react as if Adolf Hitler had just jumped up from the ruins of Berlin. That’s how we got the hate laws, and that’s how Ernst 9 — Wediesday, April 8, 1987 - North Shore News Zundel was sentenced i 15 months in jail. But it’s quite OK to wave the flag of Red Fascism, the Hammer and Sickle. There is great indignation, on the other hand, when Hollywood departs briefly from the evils of Nazism to visit the evils of communism, as it did in the TV series Amerika. Aca- demics, you will recall, wanted that series off the air. Amerika was ‘‘warmongering’’. The ambassador for South Africa has been described in “Canada’s national newspa- | AIRPORT per'’ as a diplomatic leper. But there is no critical comment on the Soviet ambassador. They probably don't even know his name. We suffer from what an Asaerican psychologist has call- ed ‘‘selective inattention’’. That's why we treat the Russian peace propaganda seriously even though ‘‘peace’’ has meant slavery for the whole of Eastern Europe and death for the Afghans. Mellow Mikhail is the same dish served with different sauce.
