26 - Friday, December 5, 1986 - North Shore News FEDERAL GRANT Project finds THE WESTERN Institute for the Deaf recently announced the start of a one-year Job Find Project. Funded by «a $134,550 grant from the federal government’s Innovations Program, the project will continue until August 31, 1987, This pilot project, designed to promote employment for the hear- ing impaired, has two objectives: to devise and implement a Job Find Club Program which will provide hearing impaired clients with necessary job search skills to find their own jobs and to prepare an employer education program to inform and sensitize employers of the abilities and needs. of hearing impaired job seekers. The Western Institute for the Deaf is a B.C. based non-profit organization with offices in Van- couver and Victoria, offering a wide range of services to the hear- ing impaired community. Services include audiological assessment, hearing aid loan program, job placement, educational, vocational and personal counselling, sign lan- guage interpretation and technical aids services. The W.1.D. also operates a message relay centre for B.C. Telephone Company, enabl- ing hearing impaired people with TDD’s (Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf) to communi- cate with non-TDD users via tele- phone. Interested hearing impaired people are welcome to apply for the Job Find Club program or to be referred by other B.C. agencies.
