News Report He and Andy Hoxha, 12, were united nearly three years ago through Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. Hanson, 50, joined the organization seven years ago, and was first a ‘big brother’? to « young boy from Lions Bay. That relationship changed when the boy's family moved from the area. “I've been lucky. My two little brothers have been outstanding. My responsibility to these little fellows is to be a role model and a friend - not a father,’ said Han- son. The two spend at least one day a week together, said Hanson. “I’ve met many people who feel FEATURE PACKED it’s too big a responsibility and that it’s too time consuming, but it doesn't have to be,’’ he said. “Some days he'll come with me to do the things an average person would do on a Saturday. Andy lives in an apartment so he enjoys visiiing my house and playing with my dog. RESPONSIBILITY “Being a big brother doesn’t mean you take him to something big and spectacular every week.’ Hanson, who has been married for 23 years and does not have children of his own, said he feels he has gained more from the rela- tionship than Andy. “You do gain a very wonderful, young friend over time. It’s cer- tainly an opportunity for most of us to give back to the communi- ty,’" he said. Joyce Lamarche, counsellor for the organization on the North er PET UNMIS Ras FEE Shore, said there are approximate- ly 60 boys, between the ages of seven and 12, waiting for big brothers.
