Students receive scholarships

FOR THE second year, the West
Vancouver Community Art«
Council is presenting three schol-
arships t) graduating students of
the three West Vancouver high
schools.

To be selected for the scho!ar-
ship, students must have demon-
strated accomplishment and cori-
mitment to the arts in their school
and the community during their
high school years, and must be
continuing on to post-secondary
education.

At their schools’ recent gradua-
tion ceremonies, the following

students were presented with the
$500 award: Patricia Jarvis from
Hillside, Susanne Thom from Sen-
tinel and Rachel Peters from West
Vancouver Secoudary School.

Patricia Jarvis is a musician who
has performed in many schoo! and
community events, including the
‘Scholarship Showcase’, presented
the past two years by the Arts
Council to provide talented young
people from the three schools with
an opportunity to demonstrate
their accomp:.shments in the visual
and performing arts to the public
and raise scholarship funds.

Susanne Thom is an artist who
has exhibited her work at school
and community shows. She recent-
ly had her work selected as one of
12 works representing British Col-
umbia in the ‘International Young
Art’, an exhibition of 400 works of
young people’s art from 52 coun-
tiies, currently on exhibition at
Emily Carr College of Art and
Design.

Rachel Peters was selected by
the scholarship committee at her
school to receive the scholarship in
recognition for her involvement in
bands and musical theatre.
