Cap campground
is seeking to be
upwardly mobile

FRANK BAKER remembers when his father chopped down
trees and dug up roots to make way for Vancouver’s first

campground.

That was 24 years ago. Today
the Capitano Mobile Park, built on
the banks of the Capilano River
near the Lions Gate Bridge, has
become a familiar site to North
Shore residents.

The Squamish Indian Band
owns the land the park is built on,
and Baker has managed the site for
13 years now. He recalls how his
father, Dan Baker of Squamish,
originally envisioned a park for the
area.

“But when visitors started pit-
ching their tents he decided to turn
it into a campground,’ Baker
says.

“There was nothing else in the
area,’’ Baker remembers.

It took Dan four years to finish
the park, Today, the Baker family
has recently completed renovations
to the. park and plans to invest
more money. next year to

“We want to create an Indian
motif. We're planning to put up
tote poles. We also want to build
a new swimming pool and a child’s
playground,’’ says Baker.

The park is busy all year round,
with 103 mobile homes and 200
camp sites. Visitors come from
different parts of Canada and
Germany, with the majority of
visitors from the United States.
During Expo 86 the park was full
every day.

“R.V. traffic is not what it used
to be,”’ says Baker. “‘Before it was
just tents and picks-ups, but now
we're sceing huge homes on wheels
with satellite dishes and washers
and dryers. Some cost over
$200,000.""
