Poland’s decision, which was not surprising, was an- nounced Thursday, a week after the Soviet Union stunned the sporting world by saying it would not attend the Games. The Soviets said they feared for the safety of their athletes at the Los Angeles | geaae aegans 10 NOW OUT Poland joins Red boycott Games and that they were upset by the commer- cialzanon of the Games. Commentators have almost unanimously suggested, however, the Soviets are merely paying the Americans back for their boycott of the Moscow Games in 1980. The only eastern bloc country that has said it will attend the Games is Yugoslavia, which said it would not support the Soviet stand. Gulf tense after attacks TENSION REMAINS high in the Persian Gulf area at week's end after five sepa- rate incidents when jet fighters fired missiles at oil tankers in the Gulf. The latest incident Wednesday when a jet, believed to be Iranian, heavily damaged a Saudi Arabian tanker inside Saudi waters. The latest incident is reported to have all but choked off the flow of oil from the area, estimated to provide about 20 per cent of the world supply.
