A8 - Sunday, December 11, 1983 - North Shore News Ei mailbox ><| a ~ Alzheimer disease CAN be combatted Dear Editor in a recent edition of your North Shore News you published a lengthy descrip- tion of Alzheimer’s disease, with a heading in large black letters ‘‘Alzheimer’s Disease the Funeral that Continues from Day to Day’’ and I con- sider that a very cruel and un- necessary way to head the article. After you have read the this letter you will know why I resent the way you presented it and all the homes on the North Shore are entitl- ed to read a retraction article from you and know the truth about this disease. My wife, Mrs. Janet Pew, has been living with this disease for two and a half years and the only medica- tion a doctor prescribes for her is a pill once a day to keep her blood pressure normal. She has lived at home with me that whole time, with a Homecare nurse four hours per day for five days a week assisling me to keep my wife living as normal a life as possible. At the start of the two and half years my wife took a test at Wancouver General Hospital and after the brain- cell scan or ‘‘Cat-scan’’ as it is called, the result was diagnosed as ‘‘Alzheimer Disease’’. | decided that under no circumstances would | submit her to any * Front load ; * One touch rec. * Bullt-in converter VHS ° 26" Monitos « RGB inputs * Remote control ° Stereo | - Sharpness control Be: + Very compact - Compu tocus Color circultry | CABLE CONVERTER | ’ ¥ ai e”* oT < i® $ * Block converter * Uses UHF tuner on your TV a] * . . ¥ . ae G -VIDEO RECORDER * Video & Audio inputs Special in store pricing Home or Institution to cope with this disease. I have watched very carefully several cases of this disease where the afflicted person has been put in an In- Stitution and the result of each case was that their health and mental condition deteriorated slowly but surely downhill and a few have already passed away. Now the point of all this is that | am certain with my own experience that keeping the afflicted one in her own home environment and with her own family, is the only proper way to combat the disease until all the research that is going on in the U.S. and Canada, comes up witha break-through and cure of some sort. My ‘‘hold the patient at home if at all possible’ method of not letting it get any worse, has proven to myself and to anyone else in- terested that it is the only method to stabilize the disease while waiting for a cure to be found, and our doctor agrees. As } said, I resent the ude of your article and feel from my own experience that cop- ing with the disease in a pro- per way ts not ‘‘a funeral that continues from day to day.”’ Franklin J. For poses like that, 1 can read Playboy. A Sunshine Girl should be the girl on the Street, not a self admitted ‘*bizarre’’ girl posing nude. Please stay away from the tabloid sensationalism that some papers have fallen prey to and just go on publishing a good local paper. Eric W.
