to drown. Gonzales was
reported to be one of them.

But Gonzales was away
from home and when he
found out he had been ‘‘kill-
ed’’, he stayed away, going
underground with his wife
and family.

He remained in hiding un-
til 1974, doing minor jobs for
the resistance. His work with
the underground — which he
claims represented a common
front against Pinochet — in-
tensified when he returned to
his home province in 1974.

The family was forced
back into hiding in 1976
when it became known that
he wasn’t dead after all. They
spent four months on the
run, moving every 10 or 15
days, before Gonzales used
his connections and the pro-
tection of the Church. He
went into exile, finding out at
the airport in Santiago that
his new home would be
Canada.

The family arrived in Red
Deer, he found work in
Calgary and was transferred
to Vancouver in 1980. Along
the way his involvement with
an organization for Chileans
— which goes by the over-

Faced with the suggestion
that the repetitive picketing is
having little effect, Gonzales
says he is satisfied with small
advances.

what’s going on in Chile,’”’ he
adds. There, massive crowds
march in Santiago every
month as pressure on
Pinochet mounts. Chileans
on the Lower Mainland at-
tempt to match that, with a
significant difference — in
Chile some marchers die.

Gonzales talks of the need
for a revolution and for a
*tworking class democracy’”’
in Chile. Before his self-exile,
he says, he was just a little
left of B.C.’s NDP. Since
coming here, he’s moved far-
ther left.
