So before you dis- card some of those unwanted knick-knacks from_ grand- mother’s basement, like that old silver cookie jar or those dusty old books, you should check their values by visiting Heirloom Discovery Day. The event, at West Van- couver Presbyterian Church, 29th and Marine, October 20 from 2-5 p.m., is a fundraiser for the North Shore Volunteer Centre. Antique experts will be on hand to identify old books, silver, china, lace, small fur- niture and collectibles. There will be a demonstration of lace-making, as well as a number of interesting displays including antique lace, dolls, antiquarian books, and a china matching service. Fortune telling will be another feature. Several North Shore anti- que firms have donated a number of interesting items for a silent auction, which will run during both the afternoon and evening ses- sions. There will also be an information booklet available for those attending the event. The West Vancouver Police Force will have a representative on hand to help people with the marking of valuables and give advice on security measures for heirlooms. The $5 admission charge includes one expert § iden- tification, tea, refreshments and the viewing of displays. There will be a $2 charge for each additional article identified. The North Shore Volunteer Action Centre is a non-profit society whose pur- pose is to promote volun- tarism among the citizens and organizations of North and West Vancouver.
