bs election countdown = AL5 - Wednesday, November 10, 1982 - North Shore News INDUSTRIES whose products’can create hazards that may effect an entire community should not be located... in residential surroundings -- but this doesn’t necessarily mean that immediate relocation of such industries is feasable. That's the position of Alderman Marilyn Baker who is running for the North Vancouver District mayor's chair in.the November 20 election. “Concern about the production, storage and transportation of hazardous materials in our community has not diminished,” she says,” despite council's adoption of the Chemical _..Hazards..._ Task. Force recommendations last year.” She notes, however, that -- while council has already adopted three bylaws governing such activities -- the most controversial bylaw, which precludes expansion of existing plant manufacturing and con- struction of new facilities, is being challenged legally by the industries directly concerned. Lack of money, Baker says, is the problem for council. “The realities,” she points out, “are that such businesses often preceded residential growth. There is not enough money at any level of government to enforce movement of such industries to more = ac- ceptable sites.” In this situation she feels it _..is council's responsibility “to ensure the maximum safety requirements as we live together, until relocation is feasible.” Smarten up — Ballard — RESTRAINTS -- helped along be increased “productivity” on the part of public servants -- is the whole platform of Janet Ballard, aldermanic can- didate in North Vancouver District at the November 20 elections. “T seek election.” she says, “as I can’t sit back and watch the present council increase - taxes-again and again.” Ballard, a District homeowner for 15 years, cites examples of the cost- cutting she would demand. Among them, the limiting of new equipment purchases and the exploring of ways to better utilize present equipment. She also wants productivity” police. “Put the police back in our neighborhoods where they belong,” she says. “We should have police vehicles patrolling our residentail Streets as a deterrent to crime, rather than sitting in the RCMP parking lot, waiting to be dispatched to a crime that has already occurred.” Another area of concern is “the time wasted during council meetings’. “District council is there to serve you, not to bicker over petty disagreements, “increased from the nor to. further political careers.” she declares. “If elected, | will deal with your concerns efficiently and effectively.” By occupation a bookkeeper, Ballard is married with two children attending District schools. “They've failed to practise restraint, cut costs or in- crease productivity. And, of course, greater production means greater shipments. “lI appreciate the tax and employment base of these industries in our community and accept the fact that relocation in the near future is a remote possibility. “But I feel council must provide maximum protection to the municipality's residents __through whatever bylaw is necessary.” All candidates in the November 20 elections have been-asked by at least two groups to state their position on this topic, Baker notes. “This is mine,” she says.
