C2 - Wednesday, June 23, 1982 - North Shore News SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Lefthanders have more headaches, stomach pains and thyroid problems as well as a tougher time learning, a Harvard Medical School scientist says. His research showed southpaws make up I5 per cent of the population and their brains are different in size from those _ of righthanders. Dr. Norman Geschwind said the frequency of auto- immune diseases - which include some types of ar- thritis and diabetes - was 250 per cent higher among lefthanders. Such diseases occur when the _ body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue instead of warding off invading organisms. Lefthanders also are more likely to have learning disabilities and = gastroin- testinal disorders such as ulcers, thyroid problems and lupus, Geschwind told reporters Wednesday at the annual meeting of the En- docrine Society “There is an increasing number of lefthanders among patients with all the well-studied developmental learning disabilities,” Geschwind — said “These disorders, which are more common in boys than girls, include dyslexia, stuttering, delayed speech, autism, hyprac tivity and the Tourette syndrome ~ Geschwind said he and [pr Peter Behan of Sc otland conducted ao study of S06 women with an men and equal amount of lefthanders and righthanders’ before making the conclusions to be published in the fall in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The neurologist said there was growing evidence the link between left-handed mates and certain ailments is related to testosterone, the male sex hormone. Large amounts of testosterone are secreted by male fetuses while the brain isdeveloping and certain learning disorders or diseases havebeen traced to the level of sensitivity to the hormone. Geschwind's follow earlier research in which he found there are striking differences in the sizes of certain areas in the two sides of the brain. findings Curse of the lefties Sometimes, Geschwind said the complex brain development takes place more slowly and_ less completely on one side of the brain. When this hap pens in the left side, the nght half of the brain becomes more dominant and_ the result is lefthandedness. Lefthanders, the majonty of whom are males, are more likely to become artists, professional athletes, musicians, architects and engineers, the scientist said. The reason, said Geschwind, is because the nght side of the _ brain controls logic and certain spatial abilities.
