She claimed that it was due to her con- cern about the loss of “green space” and the possible effect on soil conservation in that area that caused her to vote against the Housing Committee's recom- mendation that a 2.6 acre area at 15th and Bewicke be leased to the GVRD on a 40 Dear Editor: Re. garbage complaints as shown in the Sunday News, Jan. 17 In all fairness, the 300 complaints mentioned are not a lot, considering the population of West Van- couver. 1 guess my phone call to the Municipal Hall is included in the 300 com- plaints. It should not, as I simply phoned to enquire if there had been a garbage pickup Thursday Jan. 7, not to complain. Probably many other phone calls were the same as mine. On phoning the Haul-Away office, I was informed that their trucks were unable to collect all areas owing to the weather, but would take both weeks’ garbage on our next regular pickup day. This seemed reasonable, considering the snow conditions. We have found both the municipal and the MHaul- Away collections satisfactory, but with the latter the cost is so much less, and they also take garden refuse, lawn clip- pings and tree prunings, if properly bundled. This arrangement should make a much cleaner, tidier municipality. H_N. She later tried to buttress her sagging argument by stating that North Van City land prices were too high for the GVRD to afford, and would result in the rents being at least $700/mo. I am certain that she is as aware as I that the city can lease this land at whatever price they choose. The point here is whether we, as citizens, will sit stil and allow our elected officials, whom we put in office in order to attempt to equalize the extremes of free market conditions to the benefit of affordable all our citizens, tmstead go incomes and the 60% of us to whom $700/mo t more than 25% of our income, in preference to supplying more shopping § centres which I doubt anyone needs more of, especially sow, and which can only have i comsequences for other North Van businesses, ey ie a 10 30am iGJ3 I
