season over the weekend? The Canuck faithful
can now stand up and cheer ‘We're number 15’
while the goon lovers around the league can take
heart in the encouraging signs that violence is
alive and well and living, along with the nean-

drethal minds of the owners in the depths of the.

league.

If anyone watched the
Bruin-Canadien fiasco
Saturday night they must
surely be aware that this type
of action leaves the majority
of sports fans anywhere
totally cold and shows up the
league as second rate in
philosophy, direction and
ability. If they think
otherwise, then there is
something drastically wrong
with their concept of sport.

Could there be any
parents who could say after
that exhibition (which is
simply a replay of so many
other games during the year)
that they wanted their son to
grow up to be a hockey
player in the NHL?

Of course any ieague that
allows a full season to knock
off five of 21 teams obviously
has a rather unique mental
approach to the game in the
first place.

There is only one. reason
for haying a 16 team playoff

give all.teams a chance for
the gold ring.

Money. Taking the bucks
out of the publics. pocket for
a bit longer, as well as TV
revenucs.

Let's face it. No one can
realistically see the Canucks
going beyond the first round
of the playoffs right now. But
look at all the revenue from
the public in the two cities
plus the money for TV
rights.

The way the league is
presently structured, and

there's no way there will be .

any major change, there is
no major incentive for any of
the top dozen clubs to show
anything special during the

season. Sure they will try to
stay sharp and keep that
‘edge’ but when you come
right down to it what
challenge is there for the top
teams?

Coaches and players admit
that for the first couple of
months of the season the
players are still getting used
to each other and are
working themselves into
shape.

It is always frustrating to
hear that tickets for the
games aren’t graded with the
cheaper prices coming
during the first few months
building up to the last week
or so when it all really starts
to count.

make us aware that sport can
have a more noble aspect.

Even if he doesn’t make
the New Brunswick border,
he is a hell of a lot tougher
and more dedicated than
most of us.

AN ‘INSIDE’ LOOK
A couple of weeks ago a

“new sport magazine hit the

Stands. ‘Inside Sports’ is
owned and produced by the
same people who give you
‘Newsweek’ and is one of the
more refreshing sports
publications to come along
in some time.

Too often this type of
publication gives itself over
to the ‘golly gee whiz look at

all the superheroes’
philosophy.
Fortunately, Inside

Sports, in the ‘charter’ issue
goes the opposite way. They
have some good writers. who
are not afraid to make the
reader think — %n all too
rare occasion in the. world of
sport today. —

In fact ‘the magazine is
designed to be for thinkers.
Not filled with large glossy
photos with a minimum of
print, but apparently put

together for the person who

sees sport at its best as

having a strong physical and

mental affect on our lives.
Most refreshing.

Royals and Rovers to semis

West Van Royals had a
busy but  produ¢tive
weekend in the Divison four
tournament of the Van Met
Soccer League.

Royals picked up a pair of
wins to move them into the
semi-finals of the 32 team
league competition.

On Saturday Royals
registered a 3-0 win over
Micaelance in a tough match
to move them into quarter
final play. The two teams
had been tied in points and
goals following the first
round robin series and the
special playoff was
necessary to eliminate one of
the teams.
