This woman gave me several years of excellent service, even holding back items for me until they officially went on sale. In the meantime, | have developed a very good friend- ship and close political ties with a gentleman who also works at the same store. My problem is that both people work on commission, and | am unsure about the proper thing to do. The man is my friend and ally, and tru- ly needs my business. The woman is wealthy and does not need it, but obviously feels | owe her my loyalty based on her prior service. | tend to agree, but feel badly for not giving business to the man. ‘Passion’ takes no prisoners Above all, | wish to offend neither party. Whar should | do? While there are rules of etiquette on this point for realtors and lawyers, I am unsure as to how one handles this kind of thing in other professions. GENTLE READER: You have confused two sets of obligations here, one for the business world and one for the personal. If you keep doing this, you will get into deeper and deeper trouble, with both those who provide you with services and those who are VERYONE seems to be the victim in Crimes of Passion, victims of their own attempts to come to terms with emotional and physical love. Set in the seedy side of town, where hookers strut the streets and tred-looking men come to watch sleepy- eyed strippers, Crimes of Passion centres around China Blue and the tricks (customers) in her hfe. The storyline ts not new. Prostitution makes prisoners out of both men and women says the plot over and over again. Marned couphes are not always honest with one another and everyone has dif- ferent needs in love While there’s nothing earth shattering about all this, the steamy performance by Kathleen Turner as the part. time prostitute China Blue adds a gulsy glitter to the film o C By COLIN LAMONT While you may not believe that a successful fashion designer by day puts down her pen to walk the streets by night, Turner rivets your at- tention on China Blue. Don- ning a blond wig and short skirt, she plays her own fan- tasies of love while acting out the fears and fantasies of her male customers. “‘You can have any truth you want,”’ exclaims the sensual street walker to a back street preacher out to save her soul Anything you want for $50 But reality soon rears its ugly head for China Blue as the preacher (Anthony Perkins) curns from his bible to violence as the tool for your friends. What would happen if you cut off the salesperson who had given you good service, in favor of your friend, who then did the job badly, lovable as he may be in private life? Miss Manners strongly ad- vises you to learn to separate these realms. Loyalty to a friend means sticking by him, through ups and downs, forgiving lapses or errors of judgment. When you can no longer do that wholeheartedly, tolerating the bad with the good, the friendship is in danger. Loyalty to a_ business- person, however, means rewarding good service. You would be within the realm of good business manners to withdraw your patronage from this woman were you dissatisifed with the service (regardless of whether other saving her soul.
