FOR 15 years Lillian Peters has been a regular visitor to North Shore senior citizen homes and hospital long- term care wards. Like many members of the North Shore Volunteers for Resi- ee. dents in Care Facilities, Peters says she enjoys entertaining the seniors in sing-alongs and spending time with them in conversation. And at 79 years of age, Peters says she doesn’t plan to slow down in her volunteer work. “T never have any dull moments — I'm still pretty much a going concern,”* A former music teacher, Peters began her volunteer work as an entertainer when she accompanied a 29 - Wednesday, October 22, 1986 ~ North Shore News Presto! — Halian surprise PAGE 31. eS te Pie rey a friend to a private home for seniors. “I love it. It gives other people enjoyment, and I’ve made so many friends. “I always say to my daughter ‘I don’t know which home I'll go in- to when my time comes,’ It will be hard to choose,’’ she said. Peters is one of the longest-serv- ing members of the North Shore Volunteers for Residents in Care Facilities, which has been in ex- istence for 26 years. The main purpose of the organization is to coordinate week- ly entertainment and arts and crafts activities for the local senior homes. The organization’s director Wendy Hanna said the ideal situa- tion would be for each of the 1,200 residents in North Shore homes to have a volunteer visitor. Hanna added church members ate AEN SS have been the ‘‘backbone”’ of the volunteer agency, visiting seniors through their individual outreach programs. ‘But, we also need to encourage the community surrounding the care facility to get involved.” She said volunteers who have driving skills are especially needed. “I think a lot of people are frightened. They identify that (old age) is coming soon to them and if they’re middle age it depresses them.” Besides working to attract more volunteers, the board of the North Shore Volunteers for Residents in Care Facilities recently instituted a capital fund-raising drive. Hanna said the objective is to raise $300,000, which if properly invested, could provide sufficient working income for the associa- tion. oe NEWS photo Terry Peters MEMBERS OF the North Shore Volunteers for Residents in local long-term care facilities meet to discuss vol- unteering opportunities.
