Still, the LS has two important things going for it right off
the bat.

First, its plat
designed Jaguar

The LS and S-Type share owo similar overhead cam V6 and
V8 engines, a five-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc
brakes, traction control, and an anti-skid system. The LS even
has something the Jaguar doesn’t (in North America)
speed manual transmission with the six-cylinder engine.

Secondly, the LS is priced lower than most of its competitors.

Lincoln LS V6 models start at $40,995 and V8 models start
at $46,995. Compare that to $59,995 and $69,995 for the
Jaguar S-Type; and $58,500 and $74,200 for the BMW 528i
and 540i. With the possible exception of the V6 Cadillac Catera,
the LS is the best value in its class. °

Great engines, great chassis

Base LS V6 models use 2 modified version of Ford’s Duratec
3.0-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with 210 horsepower, and
LS V8 models have a 3.9-litve version of Jaguar’s 4.0-litre
DOHC 32-valve V8 engine with 252 horsepower. .

Lincoln reduced the size of this engine because, “it delivers
the best balance of performance and efficiency, and offers a
comparable displacement to V8"s offered by other manufactur-
crs.”

The LS V8 engine features a coil-on-plug ignition system,
platinum-tipped spark plugs, and a cruc dual-exhaust system
with one catalytic converter, muffler and resonator per side.
With 252 horsepower at 6,100 r.p.m. and 267 Ib.-ft of torque at
4,300 rp.m., the LS V8 shoots trom zero to 60 in about 7.5
seconds, a very quick time for a mid-sized sedan. The V8 engine
is very smooth, free-revving and powerful, although low-end
torque is not abundant. At 100 km/h, it loats at just 2,000
np.m., making highway cruising quiet and comfortable.
