Dubbed the Bear Man, : Searles -brought: his message to North '- Vancouver last Friday. That’s an extremely dis- north shore news VIEWPOINT turbing number made more so by the fact that many of those shootings could have been avoided. Bears are not at the heart of the bear problem; humans are. Searles’ approach, which he pio- neered in his Californian hometown of Mammoth Lakes and has since been adopted in the Whistler area, involves the use of fireworks, rubber bullets, noise makers and pepper spray to discourage bears. Add to that a good dose of public education about living at the edge of a wilderness area and the program could help cut the nuraber of bears shot on the North Shore. - Searles’ alternative cultivates a bet- ter understanding of bears that could help conserve their numbers. It might - require more work on the part of the public, but its payoff will be worth it.
