f the 2nd Narrows crossing’ is the lronworke ON June 17, 1994 then-Premier Mike Harcourt official- ly dedicated as the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge what had, until then, always been known as the Second Narrows crossing. The intent was laudable: to honor the 23 workers who died a horrible death when the bridge they were constructing £0 years earlier collapsed beneath their feet. [t’s unfortunate that the perception of politics clouded the renaming. Too many people construed that an unpopular NDP government was finding yet another cheap way to cosy up to organized labar votes. Perhaps the truth lay more in the same fuzzy, feel-good thinking that substituted the title “Spirit” for “Queen” in the ferry fleet, in case the old name was sexist, or monarchist, or homosexual or something. If the NDP had only settled on the easier-to-say “Ironworkers Bridge” perhaps we would have used the name more readily. We all could care more.
