A land-use study is expected to be completed by mid-1997. Greystone is paying $50,000 to augment city staff resources for the study. City planners say the site could provide one to nwo million square feet of light industrial or commercial development. Some areas of the Fullerton property require environmental cleanup. The situation “remains a major obstacle to redevelop- ment of the site,” a staff report to council points out. The Ministry of Environment has ordered Imperial Oi Ltd. to conduct the cleanup. The property, about four times the size of the Versatile Shipyard lands further easr, is surrounded by tight indus- trial development, including some business parks. Greystone is teamed with Vancouver Port Corp. and Marriott International Ltd. in the race to secure the con- tract to build a new conven- don centre, cruise ship berth and a 500-room hotel on pert-owned land located to the wast of Canada Place in downtown Vancouver. THE Fullerton site will be developed over a num- ber of years. An environ- mental cleanup must occur first. EATEN RY Ur bat ey oy Lo ER at GA dae S, FINA EBERT OMEST FLITE ee? HEE EIS NEWS cr: pe Linda Douglas Bologna and beans on menu Stink raised over NVP pay move By Ian Noble News Reporter OPFOSITION to the 50% pay hike North Vancouver District councillors handed themselves Monday has inspired a hand- out. North Vancouver lawyer John Lakes is organizing the Feed the Greedy Five food bank to nourish the hard-up municipal politicians who approved the raise. He said he’s looking for donations of bologna and beans “so the politicians can have ample hot air.” “I haven’t been so angry about something like this for years,” he said. Lakes is counting on pub- lic pressure to make sure the approved raises don't go through. He sees an opportunity to change council’s collective mind with his satirical cam- paign before the increases are written in stone. A new bylaw supporting the increase is expected to be introduced at the Jan. 6 council meeting and passed at the Jan. 13 meeting. Lakes wants residents to raise enough opposition at the Jan. 6 council meeting ta force council to have a sec- ond look at the raise. The irate Lakes said the greedy five include new councillors Trevor Carolan, Lisa Muri, and Glenys Deering-Robb and longtime councillors Ernie Crist and Pat Munroc. When they approved the raise Monday the council members said being a coun- cillor costs money in terms of car expenses and time away from a day job. Coun. Janice Harris rejected the increase that will see councillors’ pay rise to $29,715 retroactive to Dec. 1. She said the existing indemnity was “reasonable tecompense.” Lakes noted the extra $60,000 a year that will go toward councillor salaries equals approximately two entry-level jobs at the dis- trict.
