BC Hydro expands
Power Smart drive

BC HYDRO’s Power Smart
drive to reduce the number
of households with
energy-wasting second
refrigerators has now. ex-
panded to the Lower
Mainland.

After highly successful pilot
programs in several B.C.
municipalities, the refrigerator
buy-back program became active
province-wide during December.

In the program, owners: of
operating second refrigerators will
be offered a $30 incentive plus
free pickup by locally approved
contractors.

According to program manager
Jeff Scotland, participation in the
program so far has exceeded
everyone’s expectations,

“Since 1990 we have dismantled
and recycled over 28,000 of these

Scotland explained that a new
energy-efficient fridge costs be-
tween $45 and $60 tu run for a
year. ‘‘Older fridges, often
underused for a few beverages,
can easily cost up to $100 a year,

The refrigerator buy-back pro-
gram is one of many Power Smart
programs in the residential, com-
mercial and industriai sectors..

Power Smart is Hydro’s am-
bitious initiative to motivate cus-
tomers to be more energy effi-
cient. It will play an important
and continuing role in meeting
B.C.'s demand for electricity.
