NV council targeting youth with Oostindie presidency AN EMILY Carr College stu- dent is about to become the next president of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. By Evelvn Jacob Now Reporter Twenty—five-year-old Irwin Oostindie, a former Sutherland Secondary student, will be voted in by the organization’s members at its Sept. 15 annual general meeting. Oostindie, whe replaces outgo- ing president Donna Oseen, will become the youngest president in the council’s history. Executive director Elia Parkinson said he will help bridge the gap between the arts council and North Vancouver youth, “We have made a commit- ment that we're going to try to help youth. There's really nothing for them on the North Shore. He’s {Oostindie) the one who'll reach them. | think he can do it hetter than anyone,”’ said Parkinson. She said the community ars council has fallen short of its desire to involve North Shore youth in the arts, “We've tried to put on workshops for them in the past but the thought of a workshop turns them off. We've tried to put on various events but got absolutely nowhere. Things that work with other groups just don’t work with this age group,” she said, adding that young people make up a very small portion of the council’s 335 members. The hope is that Oostindie will take the council into a new direc- tion. Among other things Parkin- son would like to see a year-round multi-discipline arts program in which young people aged 13-17 can learn about photography, how to write scripts, poetry and how to make prints. “It may not work but we're go- ing to give it a try,” she said. Oastindie, however, said he does not plan to focus exclusively on youth. ‘’My focus is grassroots development of the arts. We've revamped the arts council and have come up with a set of goals for next year which includes in- valving artists in a democratic process in the arts council, pushing for more facilities for ar- tists, fundraising, and supporting youth,” Onstindie, who has served on the arts council board since 1989, emphasized the need for the community arts council to keep in touch with the artists it supports. “We should be the ones with our ears to the ground. We can’t wait for other !evels of government to lead the way,” he said. Oostindie said he will be work- ing closely with the council’s two new vice-presidents, Richard Strachan, an actor with the North Vancover Community Players, and visual artist Kadi Rae-Madrus. Among other things, he would like to see the arts council’s schol- arship program be dismantled in favor of community artists’ pro- jects. “Personally | think scholar- ships are rather elitist.” Choir seeks new members for ensemble DOGWOOD CHORUS is hoping to add more voices to its 32- member ensemble. {In order to increase its membership to 50, the group has Wednesday, September 9, 1992 — North Shore News - 25 mounted a search for women singers.
