any car which has just surviv-
ed a cold, damp winter
undergo a complete
mechanical check-up.

warm days ahead will result
in better gas mileage and
possibly prevent expensive
repairs later on,’’ says Peter
Lange, BCAA’s Manager of
Consumer and Technical
Affairs.

To ward off rust and cor-

rosion from chemicals col-
lected during winter months,
your car requires a thorough
wash and pohsh.

“While a car owner’s
manual is a good guide for
recommended maintenance,
owners of older cars should
keep in mind that their
vehicles need more frequent
attenuion,’’ Lange cautions.

BCAA offers the following
guidelines for seasonal
maintenance that apply to
MOSlt passenger cars:

Points, plugs, air filter
condenser, ignition wires and
engine timing should be
checked and cleaned, replac-
ed or adjusted as part of a
routine tune-up.

The oil and oil filter should
be replaced using proper
grade summer weight or
multi-grade oil. Contrary to
what many car owners
beheve, the filter should be
changed each ume the oil 1s,
not every other time. The
filter holds a quart of oil. If 1

is not changed, the clean oil
will mix with dirty onl as soon
as the engine 1s started.

Check the battery for pro-
per fluid levels and charge
Any accumulated corrosion
should be removed from the
terminals

Replace snow tires with
regular tires, but not before
they have been checked for
damage and tread wear. It
last season's tires are in good
