Big Brothers host fourth annual soap box derby THE FOURTH Annual Big Brothers Soap Box Derby promises to be the largest one ever with a_ record number of entries. The derby is being held on Ring Road Hill at Simon Fraser Uni- versity in Burnaby on Saturday, Sept. 12. . Interest in the race is largely due to the thrill of the event expe- sienced by the boys in previous years. Each car is built by a big and little brother pair and has its own unique design and paint job. Special care is taken by Big Brothers to ensure safety, and each car goes through a safety in- spection prior to the race. “Each car must be solidly built, have adequate steering and brak- ing systems, a solid roll bar, and a seat belt before it can race,’” says derby chairman, Gary Mitne. Time trials for the Soap Box Derby start at 9 a.m., with the ac- tual races beginning at noon. Lit- Ue brothers compete for trophies and prizes in three different speed categories. ' The’ derby is held during Big Brothers Month in September to draw attention to the ongoing need for more big brother volun- teers. Big Brothers of Greater Van- couver, now celebrating its 35th year, is a non-profit organization that recruits, screens, and trains men to be friends and role models to boys from male-absent homes. Once the big and little brother matches have been established, they are supported and monitored by professional counsellors. In 1991, 420- boys benefitted from having big brothers.
