OPTIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS THE FOLLOWING is a selection ef volunteer opportunities avail- able through North Shore Com- munity Services (NSCS). AN ART show coordinator is needed to work with a commitice that organizes art shows. Duties include hosting art receptions and contacting artists and public of- ficials. The volunteer should be very interested in visual art and have a desire to promote art in the community. The coordinator will work approximately two hours per week. Also needed is a creative person to assist at art exhibitions by hanging paintings on the wails and taking them down after the show. The hours are from 9 a.m. to nocn on the third Thursday of each month. Orientation will be provided. AN OPEN custody centre for troubled teens needs tutors who are able to assist residents with their math, English and social sciences studies. THE CENTRE also needs in- structors who are interested in teaching a variety of crafts in- cluding sewing, knitting and cop- per tooling. Experienced guitar players are wanted to teach basic guitar methods to a small group of resi- dents at an open cusiody centre. People interested in cooking are also needed by the open custody centre to conduct cooking and nutrition classes. Volunteers interested in working at the centre must be willing to undergo a criminal record check and enjoy working with troubled teens. The hours are flexible and orientation will be provided. CARING, committed people are wanted to provide one on one emotional support to persons who are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. Volunteers will receive training and can expect to work four hours per week. AN OFFICE worker is needed for general office duties by an organization that provides free identification services to losi children and disoriented adults. Training will be provided and the hours are flexible. Students need homes THE HOMESTAY program at Vancouver Community College is looking for families willing to open their homes to visiting stu- dents. Through the program, high school and coilege students from Quebec, Japan end other coun- tries are brought together with Vancouver-area_ families. While the students spend two or three weeks studying in Vancouver, they also have a unique opportunity to experience Canadian culture. And hosts, too, will fearn. By giving their time and hospitality, they will gain even more in cul- tural understanding and friend- ship. Homestay families must be will- ing to provide an English-speak- ing environment, suitable accom- modation for one or two students, a welcome atmosphere and three meals a day.
