LANDSCAPING should br- ing you pleasure and joy. And with spring here, it’s time to start thinking about gardens again, so the Van- couver Spring Garden Show has the tips you’ll need. However large or small your yard or property, you can extend the lifestyle you enjoy inside your home to the environment outside your door. Planning can yield a prac- tical and pleasurable living space that only the outdoors can offer, whether you want to sunbathe, play croquet, barbeque, work, dine in the shade, or just relax in a hammock. You should not overlook the fact that a good land- scape also increases the value of your property. But the most important function of a landscape is what it does for you and the other people who live there. Landscape contractors and landscape designers will be in attendance during the Van couver Spring Gardener's Show, Apml 6, 7, 8 at the Forum and Food Buildings at the PNE. Your success as a gardenc: will depend largely upon the condition of your soil. Many people with gardens take or spring ardening - their soil for granted. They turn it over in the spring,- rake it a little, put in a few seeds or plants and wait for results. They may have to wait for a long time. For nearly all plants, the ideal soil has the following properties: a medium loam texture and well-drained sub- soil. A substantial amount of humus (decaying plant and animal remains). Sufficient plant food sup- ports maximum growth and sufficient lime counteracts soi] sourness. Despite the claims which are sometimes made there is no ‘‘magical’’ method which will transform every soil into the ideal fertile loam describ- ed above. Each soil type re- quires its own special treat- ment, and a combination of soil improving operations are necessary in each case. At the Vancouver Spring Gardener's Show you will be able to gather advice from fertihzer companies, peat moss and soil suppliers, even bring a small sample of your garden soil and have it tested for sotl sweetness (rain washes lime out of garden soils), without adequate lim- ing, soils become sour and nearly all Mowers, shrubs and vegetables begin to suffer.
