News’ Sailing Race promises fun for ali ANNUAL RACE SET SAILORS are hoping for brisk winds and taut canvas as they get ready for the upcom- ing North Shore News Sailing Race, set this year for Father’s Day, June 17, By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer “Safe sailing. keen competition, and plenty of fun for the whole family” is the aim of the annual race, says News promotion manager Cheryl Carter. The race, which is in its 13th year, will cover the traditional !2-mile course. Participating boats should check in wigh the com- mittee boat just off West Vancouver's Dundarave Pier on race-day morning between 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. Following a sequence of horns and colored flags, the race will begin at 10 a.m... precisely, from the Dundarave Pier starting line. Sailors will round markers off Point Atkinson and Poiat Grey, then head east to the finish line of f Kitsilano Yacht Club. After the race, all participants are invited to the Pelican Bay Dining Room at the Granville Istand Hotel for entertainment, refreshments, and the awards ceremony. There are no losers in this race; even skippers who don’t reach the Tinish fine by the official end. 3 pumt.. FOR FATHER’S DAY will receive inscribed medallions if they proceed straight to the hotel. Crew members of all par- ticipating boats will get the News* traditional Salty Dog certificates. Award plaques will not only be given to skippers finishing first in various boat length categories, but to such winners as the best decorated boat, the best var- nish and paint and the oldest and youngest crew members. Numerous fun categories for aware? plaques include best nautically dressed crew, the best junior pirate and the best bribe attempt. The last rewards the moi cre- ative dishonesty. AN new category this year will tevognize the Most Enthusiastic Sailing Club. The awards party will be hosted by a celebrity from QM/FM 103.5, which is co-sponsoring the race. Peter Speck, publisher of the Nerth Shore News and an avid sailor, will conduct the the pre-race ship- pers’ meeting on Thursday, June 24. 7:30 p.m. at the newspaper's offices at 1139 Lonsdale ur North Van- COUVET. Alt types of sailboats are invited to enter, us are all ages of participants aad boats from all sailing clubs. The deadline for entries is Friday, June 15, at noon and the fee is $25 per boat. Durward breaks 800-metre record HANDSWORTH TRACK and field star Lori Durward set yet another record at the B.C. High School Track and Field Champi- Onships held at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium over the weekend. Durward knocked nearly two seconds off the B.C. high school meet record set in [982 in the girl's 800-metre race when she captured the event by clocking in at a time of two minutes, 08.61 seconds. She finished the race 120 metres ahead of the second place finisher. Last week. Durward set a record by running the 800-metre race at an Abbotsford high school meet in a time of 2:06.9, the fastest run by a North Americar high school girl.
