2INFLUENCE 2! - Sunday, March 4, 1990 - North Shore News IN HIS OWN WORDS Jardine ponders college's future n what the most impor- tant part of his job is: It’s trying to keep track of what's going to happen in the future and how the college can contribute to that. This province last year had a program called Access For All and as a result of that, three colleges (out- side of the Lower Mainland) were given degree-granting status. The access problem is not in the boonies, it’s down here. We turn- ed away 2,200 students in aca- demic studies alone last year. The question for us is where does Capilano College fit into this Lower Mainland education sub- system? What program will we have that will serve a need in the future?”’ On the state of post-secondary education in B.C.: ‘‘i would say overall it is in a healthy state. We have a good system, but there's considerable changes coming up.” On predictions by B.C. Finance Minister Mel Couvelier that recent cuts in provincial transfer pay- ments announced by federal Fi- nance Minister Michael Wilson may have an impact on B.C.’s post-secondary educatian sector: ‘"f the provincial government finds it necessary to pass on to education the reduced payments in education, then we're in trou- ble. We're not in bad shape right now, but we're just hanging in there by the skin of our teeth. If that happens (post secondary- education cuts), then we'll lose everything we gained.” On why it has taken so long to get a sports facility for the college: “Ten years ago the capital fi- nancing of the system was dif- ferent than it is today. Ten years ago we made a pitch to the Management Advisory Council and we told them we should have a gymnasium, and we were told we would be the next for call down. Then restraint hit and they said there was no money for a gymnasium. In about 1984 our college board said ‘let's see if the provincial government would pay ° a third (of gymnasium construction ClChee/ro. cost), have the local municipalities ® Pay a third and we'll fund-raise for ; . * a third from the community.’ A pte laaiiatea, Introducing an whole year went by before we got ; oe ue the province and the exciting new way municipalities to agree.
