RACE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY WV marathon ready to roll IT’S TIME to dust off your run- ners and break into the rigors of training once again for West Van- couver’s fifth annual Half Mara- thon on June 4. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporier For the second year the race, organized by the Vancouver ‘alcons Athletic Ctub, includes the less arduous 5-kilometre race — a flat course in which participants can walk or run. A wide range of athletes are ex- pected to turn out — everyone from prize winning marathoners to families out for some fun with the kids. The races have age categories from 18 and under to 70 plus so runners of all ages can join in. Mect director John Hill says the Szfe run THE FOLLOWING tips on ing for the June 4 West Vancouver Half Marathon were prepared by Merina Farrell and Molly Garnes of the YMCA. Carmen Tenge, nutritionist and co-owner of Personal Best Fitness, contributed the nutrition questions and answers. © Prepare for the commitment; focus on your goal but don’t lose sight of the fun element. © Joining a club can provide you with both a safe and. enjoyable program and invaluable team sup- port. . © Your training program should be long and slow with no more than five per cent increase in training distance per week to avoid injury. @ Untrained runners should prepare for eight months of train- ing versus a minimum of 20 weeks for trained runners. ® Each day of running should be followed by a day of rest to allow for muscle and bone repair. _ © Don’t “run through” injuries or ,discomfort; early detection can minimize time off. Se Ee eT WR IE Te 8 EE a TRENT shorter course was started to en- courage the spouses of racers to get involved, rather than watch from the sidelines, Recent years have seen as many as 600 people run the course with Many more spectators cheering them on. The course record for the half marathon is held by John Strickland with a time of 1:09, and for the 5-kilometre race, 15:09, held by Mike King. Starting time for both races is 8 a.m., on Sunday, June 4. The shorter race starts at the Ambleside concession stand and the half marathon starts at the lagoon in Ambleside park. As in previous years, the half marathon will be a double-loop course which follows the water west along the seawall and Bellevue until 31st, where runners turn at the train trestle to continue back to Park Royal along Marine Drive and Bellevue. The second loop takes runners behind Park Royal, along Capilano River and back into Ambleside to repeat the first half of the course. The first male and female to cross the finish line of each race will win AIR B.C. tickets to any destination in B.C., Alberta and the Yukon. Winners of the grand draw wiil win a mountain bike and a Gore-lite track suit. Registration fee is $15, or, for $19, entrants will also receive a pair of black lycra shorts. Entry forms can be picked up at the West Vancouver Recreation Centre and local sporting good stores. means preparation * Stick to your training schedule. Many injuries happen by going that ‘‘extra one or two miles’’ when you’re feeling good. ® Good running shoes are essen- tial, Go to a reliable trained salesperson to find a shoe that fits your feet and your training needs. Don’t skimp in this department. Vary your routes and training times to decrease boredom. Runn- ing with a companion is also great motivation. ® You do not need to consume Gatorade-type drinks to replace electrolytes such as sodium and potassium that aro lost in sweat. During exercise, you lose pro- portionately more water than you do electrolytes, so that the concen- tration of electrolytes actually in- creases in your body. Your first need is fluid. Electrolytes can be replaced after you exercise. A large glass of orange juice replaces all the potassium you might have lost during a mara- thea, © Water requirements: Before activity: Make sure you vee. ee a ae Lal oe have been drinking plenty of water so that you are not dehydrated be- fore you begin your event. During activity: 200 ml every 20 minutes. After activity: One litre of water for every one kg loss of body weight. © Should I be consuming a high protein diet? _ There is no ‘‘competitive advan- tage’ to eating a high-protein diet since excess protein does not get stored in the body as muscle. © Should I eat just before competi- tion? No foods, not even high-car- bohydrate foods, should be eaten an hour or less before competition. If you compete with food in your stomach, you may get an upset stomach. Eating high-sugar foods, such as candy and soft drinks, may also hurt your performance by produc- ing low blood sugar.
