Midge Ure — Answers To Nothing, Chrysalis Records/MCA 1988 The follow up to Ure's solo release of three years ago, The Gift, moves along with supple #~ precision from the moment the first note is popped off in the bouncy title song, Answers To Nothing. MICHAEL BECKER music reviewer The impassioned musings are the result of 10 months spent re- cording in his home studio. Answers To Nothing is an act of creative purging. As co-writer of the Band Aid holiday hit Do They Know It’s Christmas, and through his work with the Live Aid famine relief effort for Ethiopia, Ure has figured largely as part of the trendy pop music philanthropic phe- nomenon. in part, the songs on this release respond to despair witnessed first-hand in Africa. While the former Ultravox guitarist and vocalist claims no ar::wers, Cirection is offered in an eppeal for “love for the lone- ly...dgod for the hungry...peace in a resifess world...hope for the child:=n...a worldwide religion.” The songs are all strong and bristle with seductive pop hooks. Ure’s self-production is unclut- tered. There is much to like about the release. The song Sister And Brother is even easier to like with the inclusion of spine-tingling support vocals by Kate Bush. | . = VANCOUVER * = FILM. = = SCHOOL ed @ TheB6. film midustry ep 'S growing rapidly * thet time far training @isnow - =. @ Vancouver Film School offers.a comprehensive. immersion program - for people serious about workingin the, industry Call now aout the. Aside from Midnight Oil's bor- rowing of the Hunters & Collec- tors’ horn section for supercharg- ed backup on the hit Beds Are Burning, the two bands share a ically uncompromising lyrics. But while Midnight Oil chose to focus on the plight of Australia’s aboriginals, Hunters & Collectors walks us along the bread line and into a world defined by broken dreams and populated by broken preoccupation with penning polit- people. Raw guitars and lead singer Mark Seymour's earnest outbursts are given an elegiac sense of dignity with a tasteful lacing of brass throughout the LP.
