Firms hope to ped _ panies. oto su al into healthy profits TWO B.C. companies head- ed by West Vancouver resi- dent Keith McMyn, 51, have acquired the world rights to a new bicycle pedalling system which is said to in- crease the power and per- formance of an average bicycle by 15 to 28 per cent. Invented iss Germany by mechanic Freder Stuckenbrok, 57, the STS Power Pedal System employs a telescopic crankarm. When the rider pushes down on the pedal, the arm extends from the norma! iength of 17 cm. to 22 cm. On the up-stroke, when less power is being applied, the crankarm telescopes back to its normal length. Said McMyn: “This is a natural extension of what the pedal should do, giving more power with less effort.” The rights to the invention have been acquired by Greentree Energy Inc, and Golden Trend Energy Inc. The two companies are trading on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. Included on the board of directors for Golden Trend are West Van- couver residents D. Roger Earle and Einar Brasso. The companies each hold more than 50 per cent of the world marketing rights and, jointly with German partners, hold more than 25 per cent of the When you need a fast, accurate, competitive quote on a term policy. incredible help is now a phone call away. McMyn and a Golden Trend director, Einar Brasso, travelled to Germany in April to try the system for themselves and negotiate for the marketing rights. McMyn’s legs told the story after a quich test spin. ‘‘At my age I don’t ride bicycles a lot, but after trying it, one leg was stiff and the other felt like butter. I was also very taken ty the people that invented it — very straight and old country if you like.” Inventor Stuckenbrok began development of the system in 1983. In 1984 he was named Germany’s inventor of the year. The gov- ernment of Lower Saxony backed development of the system with fi- nancial support. Before hitting the market, the system was tested for 2% years by EZN, the Inventor’s Centre of Northern Germany. While skeptics believe the system will come up against resistance * from conservative cycling en- thusiasts, McMyn and company estimate if only a two per cent worldwide market share of new bicycles is attained, the numbers would translate into profits of about $10 million per year. Approximately 60 million bicy- cles are sold around the world every year. INSURANCE QUOTATIONS The Best Policy for the Best Price #1400-406 Burrard St., Vancouver, B.C.
