MINISTER RESPONSIBLE for Youth in British Columbia Stanley Hagen recently announced the 1987-Youth Grants Program. “We have $500,000 available to encourage innovative projects and to assist young people and com- munities in developing positive opportunities for youth,” said Hagen. The minister explained that pri- ority will be given to: © pilot projects of benefit to youth and the community e development of initiative and promotion of positive . attitudes among youth and the community eimaginative, yet realistic employment ideas related to employment and development of youth . © community commitment to pro- jects ® communication and interaction among all youth of the communi- ty. While announcing the grants, Hagen said the Youth Council has identified employment and training as one of the major issues facing young people today. “To reflect this concern and respond to the need for improved employment initiatives for young British Columbians, the Youth Council has been aligned with the Job Training..section of my ministry,’’ Hagen said. Returning to ihe grants, Hagen said that, as in previous ycars, all grant applications will be assessed by the British Columbia Youth Advisory Council which then makes recommendations to him. “SE am very impressed by the calibre of projects which have been recommended to me by the coun- cil,’’ said Hagen. ‘‘To date, | have supported all of the 40 to 45 rec- ommendations, and I am confident that proposals are thoroughly reviewed on an equitable basis."’ ‘| invite young people from across the province to bring for- ward their ideas for consideration under the Youth Grants Pro- gram,’’ Hagen said. Up to $10,000 per project is available. Some of the projects which received funding under the 1986 Youth Grants Program in- clude a Job Finding Club, peer counselling projects, a mentorship program where youth were linked with adults with similar interests and goals so that they may benefit from first-hand advice and experi- ence and a pilot program for vol- unteers to work with youth on probation.
