30 - Friday, December 12, 1986 - North Shore News VETERAN RADIO broadcaster Monty McFarlane is doing what he does best, playing Big Band music to Vancouver radio listeners. The morning man on CJVB-AM Radio began his career 30 years ago playing songs from such favorites as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior, Cleo Laine, Mel Torme, Duke Ellington and Glen Miller. “I’ve always fancied myself as playing tasteful music, but this is the epitome of that stuff,’’ says McFarlane, who works 5:30 a.m. to9 a.m. Over the years, the West Van- couver personality has interviewed many big name entertainers, and counts Davis and Bob Hope among his friends. ‘“‘} remember Sammy Davis Junior when he was just a struggl- ing hoofer and singer. Now of course he’s a superstar. “*] MC’d a show Bob Hope did in Vancouver once and every time he comes to town I make a point of saying hello.”’ McFarlane, who has always brought a certain amount of un- predictability to his casy-going, By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter humor-filled show, says he plans to continue that tradition. ‘TI don’t see myself as a disc jockey, but rather a conversa- tionalist,’’ he says. “IT try to offer a smirk, a smile and a giggle.” McFarlane started in the business at the age of 10 in his hometown of Winnipeg, by reading children’s parts on radio dramas. “It got in my blood," said McFarlane, who has worked at most of Vancouver's radio sta- tions. The self-taught broadcaster says one of the main qualifications when he first began in radio was having a great voice. “My first full-time job was as a staff announcer at CBC. I was huge on hog prices on the prairies.
