Evergreen celebrates

EVERGREEN HOUSE is
celebrating its 15th anniversary this
year.

The Lions Gate Hospital Ex-
tended Care Unit first opened its
doors in the summer of !971,
becoming a home to 169 residents.

An extension in 1984 increased
the residents’ population to 294.

Residents in extended care facili-
ties require nursing care on a full-
time basis, and are unable to walk
without assistance.

The average age for residents in
Evergreen House is 85, but there is
a resident there who is as young as
21 and another resident who is

“Fifteen years ago extended
health care was very custodial,’’
said Maia Gruber, a long-term care
instructor at the house.

“The residents were kept clean
and were fed and taken care of,
but there wasn’t the same emphasis
oa the quality of life that we have
today.”’

Gruber said that for most of ihe
residents Evergreen House will be
their last home and it has been
made as ‘‘homelike’’ as possible.
