INTERVIEW WITH ANTHONY QUINN 9 - Friday, March 28, 1986 - North Shore News Zorba illustrates lost American spirit : OVER LONG distance tele- phone lines, Anthony Quinn’s voice rumbles over the potholes of an interview like a gravel truck without a muffler. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter In the midst of a 16-city tour with Zorba, the 70-year-old Mex- ican-born actor manages to growl out answers to questions he has been answering for 20 years with a freshness and enthusiasm charac- teristic of the joyous Greek he por- trays. Though the film version of Zor- ba originally roared into movie theatres and world cultural con- sciousness almost 23 years ago, the play and its lead character are far from dated, Quinn said. ““Its issues are current. Its set- ting is timeless, and Zorba, well, he too is timeless. He is modern, he is old, he is future, he is past.” DESPITE YEARS Despite the passage of years, the old Greek remains special to Quinn, whose acting career has heartily embraced rojes as diverse as Quasimodo, Stanley Kowalski and the Pope. He said he discovers something new in Zorba, and himself, each night he pulls on his alter ego’s worn sports jacket and bandana. Though he is at a loss for an ex- planation as to his own durability as Zorba, Quinn said the enduring value of the character to audiences is grounded in basic truths. “I would say Zorba represents what is important in life. He stands for true values.” ABERRATION A Zorba, Quinn said, would be an aberration in today’s society: ‘He represents a character that ex- isted in great abundance when the pioneer spirit was alive in North America, in that rousing, wonder- ful_period when the West was be- ing opened up. We've lost that pi- oneering spirit, and I think people envy Zorba for having it. They would dearly like to get it back.’’ Confessing to a limited knowl- Maclsaac Clark Lawyers ICBC Claims Fee by percentage No charge first visit 1230-1176 W. Georgia Vancouver, B.C. I live in Europe, where the people work to live. In America, we live to work. That attitude is killing the American mz2a.”’ Though Zorba has become in- distinguishable from Quinn, the American actor has managed, through strength of personality and diversity of acting talent, to side-step the suffocation of per- manent marriage to the role. When the current Zorba musical photo submitted ANTHONY Quinn and Lila Kedrova co-star in the timeless musical Zorba playing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until April 6. And will Zorba be left to dance into the past forever? ‘“Weil, 1 don’t know. 1 could go on playing him until I am 80 and 90, because I'd like to know about him then. I'd like to know what he was thinking about, what he was up to.” OUR CLASSICAL SUNDAY BRUNCH HAS STRINGS ATTACHED Relax this Sunday at the Internacional Plaza’s Classical Sunday Brunch.
