D EAR MISS MANNERS — During a recent

morning for breakfast.

The first morning, it arriv-
ed un-peeled on a plate. I
peeled it and ate it monkey-
fashion.

The second morning, the
banana arrived on 2 plate
with a knife and fork. I peel-
ed it, cut it into circles, and

vate it with the fork.

The third, fourth, and fifth
mornings, it arrived already
cut into circles.

The sixth morning, two ar-
rived on a plate. I collected
knife and fork from another
table and cut them into
circles. The waitress said she
gave me two because they
were small,

From that time on, [ ate
the bananas monkey-fashion
if they arrived unpeeled, but
ate them in circles if they ar-
tived already cut.

Now, Miss Manners, is it
correct to peel and eat the

banana monkey-fashion, or
must one always cut them in-
to circles and cat them with a
fork? We would like to stay
in the same hotel this sum-
mer. Does it make a dif-
ference if one is staying in
Mayfair or Bloomsbury?

make do with whatever tools
are on hand.

Otherwise, nationality and
neighborhood have nothing
to do with the matter. Whole
fruit served in a restaurant is
properly eaten with a fruit
knife and fork, both here and
abroad, but it is more com-

monly served abroad, where
they seem to have a better
supply of the proper utensils.
In America, we generally
treat whole fruit as a snack,
to be eaten by hand, and
serve fruit at table already cut
and peeled.

DEAR MISS MANNERS —
Recently, we eatertained in
our home a group of about
25 people we knew through
my participation in a church
choir, most of them more
than 30 years ago. Our
former choir director had
moved back into the area,
and the get-together was
planned so he and the old
group could see each other
again.

When the choir was here,
one who is interested in anti-
ques, as is also the church
‘‘crier’’ (as in ‘town crier’’)
announced that. she wanted
to “see the house’’ and 2
friend offered to show her
around.
