Furniture sales support disabled BY BUYING pine furniture at Capilano Mall between Feb. 27 and Mar. 2, you will encourage the work of disabled adults and lend support to the Mount Pleas- ant Community Workshop. The sheltered workshop, sponsored by the Arbutus Vocational Rehabilitation Society, operates programs to increase the employment potential of .-mentally and physically disabled adults. The centre provides a sup- portive environment for clients to develop good work habits, learn new skills and make friends. Handcrafted pine fur- nituze, such as book shelves, magazine racks, cabinets, tables and blanket chests, are sold at reasonable prices to the public in displays at shopping malls, such as Capilano, or are sold direct- ly through the workshop. Heart research is paying off THE LIONS GATE HOSPITAL Cardiac Early Discharge Service is off and running and has met with good response from patients and physicians. The unique service, based in the hospital's Medical Day Centre, is the result of a three-year research project completed at Lions Gate Hospital last year. It showed that early discharge of heart attack pa- tients with no major com- plications followed by a pro- gram of home visits from a cardiac nurse specialist resulted in as good a recovery rate as for. those patients staying in hospital the average length of time after an attack. Fifteen patients are now in the service which was opened in December under the direc- tion of Clinical Director Dr. Oswald Litherland and Car- diac Nurse Specialist Allison Rose, both of whom were in- volved in the research project. Rose works with hospital’s Coronary Unit and the patients’ physi- cians and sets up a schedule the of home visits for each pa- . tient admitted to the pro- gram. As a cardiac nurse specialist he is trained incard- iapulmonary resuscitation, recognition of cardiac ar- rythmias, and the operation of a protable cardiac monitor defibrillator. A progressive exercise pro- gram is tailored to the pa-. tient’s needs and surroun- dings and lifestyles. Frequent Dealing with divorce ALTHOUGH the divorcing experience is not always ‘‘for the worse’’, it can be stated with assurance that even when it is for “the better’’, difficult problems related to life changes occur for family members, In studies of psychological and physical crises, findings revealed that divorce and. separation rank second and third on the scale of seriousness behind the ad- justment to death of the spouse. Those changes include the obvious: changes in living ar- rangements, finances, child care, social relationships, job status, In essence, they add up to total re-adjustment. Some studies which have been done clearly indicate that families undergoing See page 39 Care - regular visits by the nurse provides advice, guidance and reassurance for the pa- tient and the family in learn- ing to cope with the effects of medication, and the restric- tions, alterations of daily routines, and depression that can accompany heart attack recovery. After six or eight weeks in the home visit program, the patient is tested for admis- sion to the outpatient cardiac exercise program at the hospital. The establishment of the Cardiac Early Discharge Ser- vice reinforces Lions Gate Hospital’s role as a leader in ambulatory care. The service is an important link between, the acute in-hospital care given to heart attack patients. Revenue from the pine items is used to buy raw ma- terials and equipment, and to help cover operating ex- penses. The workshop de- pends on revenue from sales to keep programs in opera- tion. Clients from all over the Lower Mainland work out of the workshop, including North Shore residents, Along‘ with i woodwork- 7 ing shop, the centre offers a sewing and light assembly work area and a janitorial training program.
