HANDICAPPED NEED FUNDS New sit-ski venture A SKIING club for paraplegics and quadriplegics in North Vancouver needs donations and able- bodied volunteer skiers to assist in developing their sport, says one of the organizers. ‘‘It’s something new, it’s very exciting. With (a dona- tion of) 10 or 50 dollars, you can really help in the initial stages of the development of this sport,’’ said Jeff Ehlert, executive director for the North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped. ‘*Three years ago, | wouldn't have known what to do with myself in terms of a winter sport activity,’’ said Ehlert, a skier who 1s himself in a wheel-chair because of muscular dystrophy ‘Snow 1 looked on as: ‘My God, | hope it doesn't " Now I look forward to tt “With the mobility impair ment, one of the things you lose is to feel the wind in your face — to run down the street. You get tt back doing things like sit-skiing "' Sit-sking is the term Ehlert uses for the specialized skiing that about 25 pcople par ticilpatuung tn the club do Because of various handicaps ranging from muscular dystrophy to spinal cord in- juries, these skiers can't stand. So they ski in devices loosely resembling dog-sleds The skiers sutoin the sleds (which cost from $700 to $2000), and use either short ski-poles of kayak -paddic style poles to guide them selves down local mountains ~ usually Whistler of Blackcomb The sit-skiers are helped by able bodied skiers who By ADRIAN CHAMBERLAIN follow them down the hills, attached to the sleds by a tether. Although family and friends of the sit-skiers help with this, the club needs more of these ‘‘tetherers,’’ says Ehlert. Volunteers should be good skiers, and would have to take some basic training Another of the sit-skiers is Yvette, a 60-year-old North Vancouver woman who skied for 40 years before becoming confined to a wheel-chair three years ago “I’ve done helicopter ski- ing before this, and this is just as exciting in its own way,”’ she said ‘‘! get but- terflies in my stomach doing this You're low to. the ground, and you have a sen sation of speed "' Yvette, who has full use of her arms only, hasn't been skiing this season (“the con ditions are so lousy right now’), bul intends to hit the slopes as soon as pessible, she said Ehlert said the sit-skiing club was initiated about four years ago when Lynn Valley teen-ager Scott Anderson and his) father read about sit skiing in Colorado Scout who has cerebral palsy took sit skung lessons there, and brought’ the sport to North Vancouver, where he gol together with a group of interested participants The sit-skiers are tremen- dously enthusiastic, says Ehlert, although poor condi- tions have prevented them from taking a ski-trip as a group this season. Being able to ski gives the members a psychological lift. ‘*That’s one of the things we do lose, and it’s a rush to get it back,’” he said. The group’s equipment and administration is handl- ed by the North Shore Association for the Physical- ly Handicapped. Donations or offers of assistance can be made by phoning 985-5371, and asking for the part-time sit-skiing co-ordiantor Ingrid Baxter, or Jeff Ehlert) The club is now funded by dona- tions from individuals or ser- vice clubs The idea of handicapped people skitng seems courageous, but Ehlert, who also fltes ultra lights (motorized hand-ghliders) in his spare time, brushes this off “Mt takes no more courage to sit-ski than for an able bodied person to strap on skis,"" he said ‘@ Fimess. ht gives much more than it takes.
