Calling for quotas

TORONTO (UPC) -
tario Industry Minister Larry
Grossman called for strict
quotas on Japanese cars
recently, warning Japanese
auto makers were prepared
to flood the North American
market when voluntary
quotas expire next month.

“A new and tougher deal
must be in place before that
tame,” Grossman told about
650 delegates to an emergen-
cy mecting of the Canadian
auto industry sponsored by
the Automotive Parts
Manufacturers Association
of Canada.

should renegotiate its auto
agreement with the United
States to ensure greater in-
vestment in the domestic in-
dustry. Both nations, he
said, should jointly negotiate
for a larger share of growing
markets in developing na-
tions.

ing in Canada.

“IT believe the Japanese m-
dustry must be prepared to

“The Japanese face and
accept quotas in other
markets. In almost every
other market — markets
smaller than ours — they
face rules that require them
to invest in other markets.”

He said if the Japanese
were unwilling to accept
such conditions “then quotas
should and must be con-
sidered.”
