When I leave for work in the mornings —E slam |

Mornings are a special
tine for me, an hour or so of
puttering and listening to my
current favourite piece of
music, By the tlme I leave I
like to feel that I am at peace
with the world, and the last
‘few weeks have been an
experlmont with the birds,
What I have been doing is
opening and closing the door
several times during the first
hour of my day, and it scems
to be working, The birds are
otting used te me, and don’t
ee when I finally shut the
door and elimb the creaky
stairs up to the trail,

Crows

crows hang around a big
dead snag about halfway
down the path, in a sunny
clearing, and 1 can’t get by
without them making an
onormous racket, I’ve tried a
few approaches, One was to
sneak by without making a
sound but they're too smart
for that simple a ruse and
they made twice as much
nolse as usual, The next day |
tried the bold but casual
technique—making lots of
nolse with my feet and not
looking at them. This was a
only tittle more successful,

My best morning was the

said to the nolsy black
watchers ‘'Hey, you guys,
this Is too much ' They

My friends were doing
thelr weekend gardening the
other day and while weeding
a rockery accidentally stum-
bled across a hidden sparrow
nest, so well camouflaged
that they picked It up as a
plece of debris and had
almost thrown it away before
they saw the young chicks
struggling in the dirt. They
put the nest back, and we all

had an anxlous time until the
distraught mother, who had
been fitting. around all
afternoon, decided to go back
to them in the early evening.
