confuses News reader

Dear Editor:

Re Nov. 23 North Shore News.

Noel Wrght’ s lecture on tolerance (Nov.
23) is very confused. He likens those who
don't agree with him to “the torturers of the
Inquisition” or “today’s Islamic fanatics sho
slaughtered 60 innocent tourists at Luxor.” He
then misrepresents his opponents’ views by
means of a childish caricature of heaven and
hell, Is this an example of tolerance?

He goes on to quote Jesus" words about
there being “many rooms in my Father's
house” but neglects to quote the following
words of the same paragraph. “Jesus said ... |
am the Way, the Truth, and the Lite. No one
comes to the Father except through me.” foo
intolerant tor Nocl, no doubt!

But Noel Wright really misses the whole
point. No one is criticizing the moderator for
promoting social action. He is being criticized

for ridiculing the Christian faith which moti-
vates people to be invelved in social action,
Who has done mare social action than the
evangelical Salvation Army or the orthodox
Christian Mother Teresa?

The moderator (feader) of the United

Church is supposed to represent the faith of

the United Church, not invent a new one.

At his ordination the moderator, and every
United Church minister, promises to exercise
his ministry “in accordanes with the Scriptures,
in continuity widh the faith of the Cheich —. ~
The doctrine of the denomination is spelled
out in 20 Articles of Faith. These beliets
include the full divinity of Christ and the reali-
ty of his resurrection. Strangely enough, some
of us are old-fashioned enough to hope that
ministers will keep their ordination promises!

Sack local health board

Dear Editor:

If a company lost 98% of its sales, the com-
pany would soon be out of business.

If a candidate received 1% of the vote, the
candidate would lose the election.

The North Shore Health Region states more
than 2,0G0 people responded to the What
Makes Us Healehy? campaign. The North Shore
Health Region further states: “In 1997 it is esti-
mated thee 175,707 peopie are living on the
North Shore.”

The two figures, 2,000 and 175,707, leave a

percentage of 98.86125 in the red.

How and why is it then, with a 98% loss,
does the North Shore Health Region stay in
business? Something is wrong! I therefore call
for the resignation of the entire North Shore
Health Region Board. The North Shore Health
Region stares: “We believe you can make
informed choices to support your own health.
And we're ready to listen.” I certainly trust that
you ARE listening, North Shore Health Region.
