Ald - Wednesday, November 9, 1983 - North Shore News Ggclection countdown i Trustee Dungey wants Dean seeks help from more dollars for schools “THE MOST CRUCIAL years that School District No. 44 has had to face in decades’’ is how North Van school trustee Roy Dungey — seeking a second term as North Van City represen- tative on school board in the November 19 election — describes the next 24 months. Planning and policy development for the future under severe restraint re quires that some firm and often unpopular decisions must be made, he says. ‘‘But,’” he adds, ‘‘they must be made with a view to the long term consequences of such decisions and with concern for the very delicate nature of our ultimate goal — the education of the young people in North Vancouver.”’ Dungey predicts that the removal of $8 million from the school district budget will have ‘‘grave effects’’ on class size, student-teacher morale and the quality and diversity of educational programs. He notes, too, that the new funding formula for educa- tion has necessitated cuts in the repair and maintenance of school buildings which will have both short term and long term consquences. *“We have been nghtfully Quality education a ‘right’ — Rivers *“*EDUCATION in the eighties is when we should be expanding our essential pro- grams to set the challenges of the future,’’ says Leonie Rivers, North Van City school trustee candidate in the November 19 election. **The quality of our educa- on programs now will be reflected in our future leaders,’” she dectares. Making her first bid for a school board seat, Rivers and her husband Glenn have been North Shore residents for the Past seven years. With a Bachelor of Educa- uuon degree from UBC, she is presently an instructor in the native employment = skills (raining program at Van- couver Community College. She has also been coor- dinator of native resource teachers tn North Van School District. Honored as a BC representative to the Governor-General’s Cana- dian Study Conference carher this year, she serves on the executive of the North Shore Neighborhood Housc board of directors; on the ad visory committee for recrea tion for North Shore Residents with Specaal Needs, and as vice-president of the LEONIE RIVERS Vancouver Indian Soaety’s board. **High quality education ts the nght of afl children in our Centre society, not a privilege,’’ she emphasizes. Although conceding that restraint must be exercised, she believes the school board’s duty 1s) to ensure restraint is carned out in a responsible manner so that the quality of cducation re mains intact To this end, she calls for a greatcr say by parcnis and the community in educabon pro grams and how school tax dollars are spent lov ally NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT NOTICE TO SCHOOL BUILDING USERS The District has been informed that employees will likely withdraw thet services effective November & It this withdrawal proceeds as announced, it will be impossible to permit community groups which have made pnor rental arrangements access to the school bulidings during this penod 1983 proud of the academic achievement of our schools and I will do everything in my power to preserve these op- portunities for future students,’” he declares. “If re-elected, I will make every effort to impress on the Ministry of Education the need to return a greater pro- portion of locally collected tax dollars to the school district in order to remedy the inequities that exist.”’ An ordained Anglican priest, active in parish work on the North Shore, Rev. Dungey is married with three sons in the North Van school system. He is. presently employed by the B.C. Board of Parole. THIS WEEKEND SAVE S3 ON A FAMILY BUCKET RISING CRIME rates and the nsing cost of policing are a major concern of North Vancouver City Alderman Stella Jo Dean — first elected to council in 1968 and seek- ing re-election for a further term in the November 19 election. She notes that 1983 expen- diture on policing in the City is set at $2.95 million, or 18 per cent of the City’s total operating budget. But, she says, “‘spending tax dollars alone is not the answer. In the last three weeks of October there were 42 apartment break-ins in Lower Lonsdale, 10 in one t.’”’ **Today,’’ Dean continues, “*the public must work hand in hand with the police to prevent crime ... the ordinary citizen must play a cmucial role in spotting and reporting incidents, as many successful criminal investigations begin with a= citizen’s call.’’ telephone public in fighting crime Tradinonal polang. she says, has been reactive rather than proactive. Today there has been a clear change in police philosophy but more members of the public must also cooperate im the police task by becoming Block prevention programs on Channei 10 TV.
