The new concrete forms shown in the photo- graph are called energy forms, and are manufac- tured in Selkirk, Manitoba. Selkirk Styrene products reports that sales have in- creased since the start of the recession, and in fact it has had to expand its work force to work around the clock in the highly mechanized plant to keep up with orders. In the picture, a simulated set up and demonstration of the forms was made to builders in the Vancouver and lower mainland area. The hose visible in the picture was used to show the ease of concrete filling using modern ready mix systems. is cc mpany is de The forms in the demon- stration were set up in about fifteen minutes, with a hammer and a step ladder being the only tools required. Corners and block outs usual in foundation walls can easily be ac- complished using simple hand tools. This ease of use has, made the forms popular with both builders and do-it- yourselfers. The forms are assembled from individual panels of expanded polystyrene, which measure four feet in length, by 16 inches in height, and with a thickness of two inches. Plastic form ties snap into plastic inserts which are embedded into each panel in the manufacturing plant. The forms are left in place after the concrete is set, resulting Interest rates could decline even further TORONTO (UPC) — In- terest rates in Canada could fall further this year as in- flation abates and govern- ments decide against new spending programs, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce said Tuesday. In its latest report on Canadian business con- ditions, the bank said lower interest rates played a major role in setting the stage for an cconomic improvement and further declines were needed “if the emerging recovery is not to fail.” Although economic prospects “have improved markedly compared to just three months ago,” the bank cautioned that recovery was “partly dependent on a number of intangibles such as a strengthening of con sumer and = investor fidence " “Given au relatively well behaved inflaton rate in 1983, a condition which may be further reinforced by dechning world oil prices. we anticipate that both the US and Canadian monetary con authorities will permit in terest rates to decline somewhat from todays levels the bank said lt said the two federal governments were strapped with large budgetary deficits and they would avoid in- troducing new spending programs which could put n supplement tast issue, we inadvertently reterred to 8.0. Large, stimulative measures would “weaken both consumer and investor confidence and, in the final analysis, jeopardize the recovery,” the bank said. in an R 16 insulation value. The forms are extremely lightweight, and are easily assembled. They do not have to be stripped or cleaned after the concrete sets, like conventional forms ‘of plywood or shiplap, a factor that gives tremendous cost savings in labour. The design of each panel gives a con- tinuous tongue and groove joining on all edges where the panels meet. The plastic form ties and waler ties stay in place after the concrete sets, a design that will hold the panels firmly in place for the life of the building, the manufacturer claims. If the foam-sandwiched concrete wall is to be finished with gyproc, strapping can be nailed to the plastic plate that will be exposed when the waler bar is snapped off. In the photo, the waler bars are holding the two by four bracing visible on the side of the forms. At one point in the ing fi test simulation, it was demonstrated that the forms will easily support a worker walking on the wooden rts. The manufacturer claims that there have been many applications across the prairies where up to eight foot walls were installed in one pour using the forms. The product has been approved by Central Mortgage and Housing, and has been tested by. the National Research Council and the National Testing Laboratories. retardant has been added to the polystyrene prior to form manufacture which has the effect of making the panels self-extinguishing except when a source of high heat is constantly applied. When the source of ignition has been eliminated the product will stop burning. All plastics used in the manufacture of these forms are non-toxic according to the manufacturer.
