stored vehicles require sal Safety checks By Jim Kerr Contr ibuting Writer WITH the return of warmer weather, many adventurers, traveiers, and auto enthusiasts are taking vehicles out of storage and getting them ready for anoth- er summer of cruising fun. Motorhome, classic car, or hot red; they all seed a few checks to eseure trouble: free summer moiering. First on the fist js the bat- tery, It is most certainly low on charge, but take a minute to clean the calies before charging it. lf the battery has remov- able caps, check the ¢lec- tralyte level and top it up with distilled water if neces- sary. Storing a battery is harder on it than using it constantly, so expect shorter battery lite than your everyday vehicle. Repair shops can test the battery in a few minutes if vou are unsure whether your batrery will last you through the summer, The brake fluid levei should be checked in the master cvlinder reservoir before moving the vehicle. -—_. Brake fluid may have seeped slowly from the wheel cytin- ders or master cylinder dur- ing storage and could cause brake failure! Peeling paint at the base of the master cylinder indi- cates a leak there, but often ders leave no indication. if you need to add brake fluid, have the entire system . leaking wheel cylin- checked for leaks and check the level every day vou drive for the first few days. Next are the tires. Air leaks slowly tires so check the tire pres- sure and inflate them to the proper pressure. Never exceed the maxi- mum pressure listed on the tire sidewall or the tire could through most explode causing — serious ak injury, Don's forget to check the spate ure alsa! When starting the engine for the first time, look care tully for any gasoline leaks. Fuel pump diaphragns can crack and carburetor gas- kets can dry out allowing tuel to leak our. This could result in a dis: astrous fire so be prepared to turn the engine off at the first sign of a gas leak and have a fire extinguisher handy! These types of leaks usual- ly show up during the firse tank full of fuel so pay special attention during this time. If there is a feak, have new gas- kets or parts installed imime- diately to protect your investment. The engine may not sun well when ft is first started. This can be caused by bad gasoline in the tank. Gasoline ts acomplex and volatile sub- stance. Some of the more volatile gasolines may have evaporat- ed leaving only low volatility fuel behind. This fucl docs not ignite easily in the engine and the engine runs poorly.
