THIS week, take a water-
front walk and. a few minutes
to appreciate our shorelines.

They have a magical allure — the
chatter of songbirds in a lakeside
wood, the splash of fish breaking the
water's surface, or the discovery or
sea stars, hermit crabs, and huge
strands of kelp on a sandy ocean
coast.

Shore lines are dynamic ecoss-
tems. The edges of our lakes, wet-
lands, rivers and estuaries (called
riparian areas) as well as ocean shores,
are cnitical to both terresirial and
aquatic species. Here, the building
blocks of natural communities ——
sun, soil, water, air, plants and ani-
mals — interact with each other in an
intricate web of lite,

Well-vegetated shorelines serve as

buffer strips, protecting banks from
crosion, safeguarding water quality,
cooling streams and providing some
of the world’s most productive
wildlife habitat.

We've taken these ccosystems for
granted: clear cutting stream banks,
building communities and industries
in floed zones, paving marshes and
danmming and diverting waterways.

began Sunday and runs to April 11 is

ested in projects designed to help our
