Other interview subjects were of similar help to Armitage. “In some cases finding out who to talk to was dependent on luck. Someone would give me a name and they would give me another name. The whole thing was century material with the core af the book focussing on settlement of the region in the last 100 years. The well-written, insightful text covers all the major points of interest: the Britannia disasters; the Cates and Mellon family businesses; the history of Point Atkinson Lighthouse; the ferry and rail companies that mace devel- opment of the arca possible. But the real value of the work is in the description of everyday lite. Much of the material is based on personal interviews the author did during her three years of research.
